ZIGBEE DOOR SENSOR GUIDE

Zigbee Door Sensors:
How to Pick the Right One

A Zigbee contact sensor is one of the simplest devices in a smart home — but the wrong choice for your specific door or window will cost you missed automations, dead batteries, or a sensor that drops off the mesh.

The short answer

For most Home Assistant setups, the Aqara Door and Window Sensor is the safest first pick: it pairs reliably in Zigbee2MQTT, holds a CR2032 battery for a year or more, and fits cleanly on most frames.

If you're fitting many sensors, SONOFF SNZB-04 is a workable budget second choice. Neither recommendation is absolute—mounting environment matters most.

Which sensor fits which door?

Entry door sensor

Entry door

High-cycle, high-stakes. Prioritise a model with a solid Zigbee2MQTT track record. The Aqara sensor suits this role well.

Window sensor

Casement window

Gap clearance is the challenge. Thin-profile sensors like Third Reality are worth considering where clearance is tight.

Cabinet sensor

Cabinet door

Low-cycle, low-stakes. Battery life matters most. Generic Tuya-compatible sensors are cost-effective choices here.

Garage door sensor

Garage door

Sectional doors have variable gaps. Use a tilt sensor or dedicated controller for truly reliable detection.

What actually matters when comparing

What to checkWhy it mattersWhat to look for
Response latencyDrives whether lighting feels instant or sluggish.Reporting within 1–2 seconds on a healthy mesh.
Battery typeAffects availability and total runtime.Prefer CR2032 or CR2450 standard cells.
Magnet gapExcessive gap causes permanent "open" status.Check published gap specs (15–22 mm).
Z2M SupportDetermines entity exposure and reliability.Verify on the Zigbee2MQTT supported list.

Installation: what trips people up

Polarity & Orientation

Some sensors have a marked face that must face the magnet. Installing it backwards causes incorrect state reporting.

Surface Material

Metal frames weaken magnetic fields. Use adhesive pads to create a small offset from metal edges for better signal.

Zigbee Mesh Reach

Sensors are end devices. If a sensor is far away, add a mains-powered router (like a smart plug) nearby to bridge the gap.

Adhesive vs Screw

Adhesive holds for ~18 months on smooth surfaces. For bare wood or textured frames, a small screw is far more reliable.

Frequently asked questions

Do Zigbee door sensors work without a hub?
No. Every Zigbee device requires a Zigbee coordinator connected to a hub. In a Home Assistant setup, that coordinator is typically a USB stick running Zigbee2MQTT.
How long do batteries last?
On a well-built mesh, a CR2032 battery in an Aqara or SONOFF sensor typically lasts between one and two years under normal household cycling.
Can I use Aqara sensors without the Aqara Hub?
Yes. Aqara sensors pair directly with a Zigbee2MQTT coordinator and appear as standard binary_sensor entities in Home Assistant.
