Running Home Assistant on Proxmox:Prepare, Install, Start

Home Assistant OS runs on Proxmox as a virtual machine. This guide walks through three parts: preparing the Proxmox host, creating and booting the virtual machine, and confirming that Home Assistant is reachable on your network and comes back cleanly after a restart.

Each part is short and ends with a check you can complete before moving on.

Prepare: Check the Host Before You Install

Most install problems come from a host that was not ready. Confirm these three things first.

01

Proxmox VE is running, you can sign in to its web interface from another computer on your network, and your account can create virtual machines.

02

The storage you plan to use has free space for the Home Assistant OS disk. Leave room to grow, because Home Assistant keeps history in its database over time.

03

You have a free IP address on your local network for the new virtual machine, and you know the IP address of the Proxmox host.

Choose a Virtual Machine or an LXC Container

Home Assistant OS is a complete operating system, so the standard setup on Proxmox is a virtual machine. This guide uses a virtual machine.

Running Home Assistant inside an LXC container is a different setup. It shares the host kernel, has less documentation for Home Assistant OS, and usually needs more manual upkeep. If you want the simplest path with the most documentation, choose a virtual machine.

Check the Home Assistant OS release notes and the Proxmox VE release notes for the versions you run before you start, because image formats and recommended settings change between releases.

Create: Build the Virtual Machine and Boot

Build the virtual machine in the Proxmox web interface, then import the Home Assistant OS disk image into it.

01

Download the Home Assistant OS disk image for x86-64 from the official Home Assistant download page. Pick the image format that Proxmox imports.

02

Create a new virtual machine. Use UEFI (OVMF) firmware and the q35 machine type. Give it the CPU, memory, and network bridge that match your host, and attach the network interface to the bridge that reaches your local network.

03

Import the downloaded disk image into the virtual machine's storage, set it as the boot disk, then start the virtual machine and open its console.

What the First Boot Looks Like

The first boot takes a few minutes while Home Assistant OS prepares its disk. The console shows the address to open in a browser once the system is ready.

Start: Reach the Web Interface and Prove It Restarts

Finish setup from another device on your network, then confirm that the system survives a restart.

01

Open http://<vm-ip>:8123 in a browser on another device on your local network. Replace <vm-ip> with the address shown on the virtual machine console. Port 8123 is the default Home Assistant web port.

02

Complete the onboarding screens: create your owner account, name your home, and choose your location and units.

03

Restart the virtual machine from the Proxmox web interface, wait for it to finish booting, then reload the Home Assistant address and confirm it loads.

About Remote Access

This setup covers access from devices on your local network. Making Home Assistant reachable from the internet is a separate decision with its own security steps, and this guide does not cover it.

Accessing Home Assistant on Your Local Network

Summary: Prepare, Build, Confirm

01. Prepare

Confirm Proxmox access, storage space, and a reserved IP address.

02. Build

Import the OS image, boot with UEFI and q35, and open console.

03. Confirm

Reach port 8123, finish onboarding, and check after a restart.

After the install works, the next step is connecting your devices and services. High-level connectivity begins here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I run Home Assistant in a VM or an LXC container on Proxmox?

Use a virtual machine for Home Assistant OS. It is a complete operating system with its own boot process. An LXC container is a separate setup with more manual upkeep, and this guide does not cover it.

Can I open Home Assistant from my phone after installing it on Proxmox?

Yes, when the phone is on the same local network. Open http://<vm-ip>:8123 in a browser on the phone. Access from outside your home network needs a separate setup.

Why does the Home Assistant address not load after the virtual machine starts?

Check that the virtual machine finished booting, that you are using the address shown on its console, and that the device you are browsing from is on the same network. Give the first boot several minutes before you retry.

Does this guide cover Proxmox backups or clustering?

No. This guide covers installing and starting Home Assistant on one Proxmox host.
